Douglas Armstrong
Doug holds a BA (Social Science) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand (1983) and an MBL from the University of South Africa (1993), School of Business Leadership (SBL). He also has a CPCC, (Certified Professional Co Active Coach), qualification through the Coaches Training Institute of California, USA.
With some 39 years of experience, Doug has held management positions in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Training & Development, and that of HR Director and CEO. He has also run his own HR consultancy and has extensive experience of among other, the Pharmaceutical, Investment Property, FMCG, Legal, Engineering and Mining Industries.
Doug has:
- represented employers at National Union Negotiations with National Union of Mine Workers (NUM), Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) and the Food and Beverage Workers Union.
- appeared as a management witness in reported Labour Court cases.
- represented employers at the CCMA in Conciliations, Arbitrations, Disputes, and Wage Mediations.
- acted as convenor and spokesman of post-strike Management by Objective (MBO) engagements and return to work agreements.
- negotiated Recognition Agreements with Unions
- implemented major labour restructuring exercises, involving change management and the outsourcing of staff including the introduction of outsourced service providers and facilities management companies.
- extensive experience of HR administration systems, Contracts, policies, remuneration, staff benefits and performance management systems.
- coached middle, senior and executive managers in various companies.

- mentored young HR graduates and practitioners
- served as CEO of a Recruitment and Temporary Employment Services Company
- appeared before the Parliamentary Labour Portfolio Committee on Labour Broking in SA in 2009.
- while at SAB was seconded to worked with management consultants, including Knox D'Arcy and the Mc Lagan Group.
- Collaborated and advised executive teams in the implementation of strategic initiatives to establish transformation, talent management and staff acquisition strategies. During Covid – 19 developed strategies for staff to operate remotely, advised on office closures changes to compensation packages, flexi working arrangements, covid policies and the return-to-work process.
- published a Book of Short Stories (The Colour Brown Nutria) and is writing his first Novel.
